You have made the decision to send your child to nursery with all the benefits and opportunities that this will bring to your child.
You want them to have fun experiences with opportunities for learning along side other children and to develop friendships with their peers and teachers.
EVEN SO... you are nervous and anxious and want it to go well.
First, check the advice of the nursery to see if they have guidance.
Understanding that separation anxiety is the key will help you to prepare.
Separating is difficult and upsetting, so why would anyone want to drag it out for longer than it needs to be?
Golden Rules for Leaving:
If the moment of separation is consistent and short it will be much easier for the nursery staff to comfort and distract your child when you have left. If separation takes a long time the child can become more distressed.
Ask the nursery to make a note of how long your child was upset for and keep a note to monitor how they are settling in. It may be that after a minute or two your child was fine and rather than worry you can be reassured with a phone call or message.
